Maithri & Ranil get more while education gets crumbs
President’s allocation for the financial year 2017 according to the Appropriation Bill presented yesterday (20th) by the Minister of Finance Ravi Karunanayaka is Rs. 6450 million and the Prime Minister‘s allocation is Rs.1250 million. It is an increase of Rs.4150 million from President’s last year allocation. Rs.850 million has been increased for Prime Minister’s allocation when compared with the allocation for him last year.
Accordingly, the President and the Prime Minister have increased their allocations by 100% compared to last year’s allocations. However, allocation for the Ministry of Education is only Rs.7900 million. It is a reduction of Rs.1090 million from last year’s allocation. The decrease is 70% when compared with the allocation for education last year.
Rs.28400 million has been allocated for the Ministry of Defense while the allocation for the Ministry of Health is Rs.16900 million and the Ministry of Highways and Higher Education is Rs.16340 million for next year. When compared with allocations for last year Rs.1400 million from Health and Rs.2200 million from national security have been slashed for the year 2017.
