Long wait comes to an end – Merriyabedda landslide victims given new homes

- newsfirst.lk

On October 29, 2014, a deadly landslide struck the village of Meeriyabedda. For two years, around 75 families struggled to live without a home, and even without their most basic needs.

Today, the villagers of Meeriyabedda had reason to smile.

News1st was among the first to respond with the Sirasa Shakthi Sahana Yathra following the deadly landslide.

Despite the immense challenges that we faced on the ground, including the unhelpful bureaucracy, News1st, together with the people of Sri Lanka, was able to provide immediate relief to these people rendered destitute.

For two years, we reported on the sluggish, incompetent and politicised manner in which houses for these people were being constructed.

Despite this, today, the villagers of Meeriyabadda were handed over their new homes, ushering in a new life.
