A demonstration took place on Saturday against an alleged move to hand over the Sudarshi Cultural Institute over to a Japanese entity. The Sudarshi Cultural Institute boasts of a history of over 62 years in Sinhala culture.
The artistes, who are among the protesters charge that the institution is to be handed over to a Japanese NGO which is not affiliated with the Japanese Embassy or the Japanese Government.
Veteran actor, Jayalal Rohana said that this is where many great dramatists were born, so it must not be destroyed and because this is located down Bullers Road – and that land is economically valuable.
“Just imagine the value of the lives of these artistes. Do not sell it. Do not sell us like you sell everything else”, he said
