Thurstan 7th outright win, Josephian Nipun first to 1000 runs

The inter-school cricket intensified during the week-end that saw Thurstan College, Colombo take top billing by notching up their 7th outright victory this season. In doing so, Thurstan made the year 2017 one of its best in a long time. Playing away in Kurunegala, Thurstan registered their seventh win was against Maliyadeva College, who were trounced by 9 wickets at Kurunegala during the week-end. Thurstan’s match winner with the ball was Naveen Gunawardhane who had a match bag of 14 wickets for 85 capped by 9 wickets for 30 in the second innings.

Meanwhile, S. Thomas’ College Mt. Lavinia did get in to the winning vein in the run up to the March big match. The Thomians defeated St. Sylvester’s, Panadura in Panadura by an innings and 40 runs.

Meanwhile, Nipun Sumanasinghe of St. Joseph’s College Colombo became the first batsman to complete 1000 runs for the season when he scored a century (114) in their drawn Singer Cup Under 19 inter-schools cricket match against St Benedict’s College at Darley Road yesterday.

Sumanasinghe passed 1000 runs in 18 matches and 25 innings with 3 centuries and 5 half centuries. His knock of 114 off 141 balls comprised 16 fours.

Other outright wins were registered by  Zahira College Akurana, Henegama CC, Nugawela CC and Dudley Senanayake MMV, Tholangamuwa.

At Campbell Place: Nalanda coasted to a 6-wicket win over Maliyadeva College.
