Sexual Harassment Probe On State TV

The Media Ministry has called for an investigation into alleged sexual harassment of some employees at State TV.

The investigation was launched after some employees at Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC) wrote to SLRC Chairman Ravi Jayawardena saying they were being sexually harassed by a top official.

When contacted by The Sunday Leader, Jayawardena said that he had directed the matter to the Media Ministry to ensure an independent investigation is conducted.

He said that since some may raise concerns an internal probe will not be transparent or credible, he had directed the matter to the Media Ministry.

Media Minister Gayantha Karunatillake told The Sunday Leader he has instructed his Ministry to look into the allegations and launched an investigation.

At least four employees of SLRC had said that they continued to receive telephone calls from the accused official making sexual advances.

One employee had said that she was unmarried and the advances being made by the SLRC official could hurt her future.

The harassed employees have said they will go before the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission if no action is taken.
