Being Creative Is Not Being Confined To One Label Or One Role
Hannah Pickering is not your average creative mind. Initially trained as a graphic designer, Hannah found her education as a liberating way to connect creative thinking with other things that she loved doing. Hannah found that design training did not limit her to being a designer, but rather it freed her to explore her many potentials by applying its core principles to solve problems with wonderfully refreshing solutions. This is what makes the basis of her newly launched, fun ventures in baking and fitness. She spoke to the Sunday Leader about these projects and how she applies creative thinking into them to make them standout and more importantly, to give her customers something out of the ordinary.
When asked whether being a designer impacted her current work and how, Hannah is quick to credit her training in the creative arts to her current success.
“Of course design has an influence on what I do! Graphic design taught me the three principals of helping someone, which I constantly look to every time I create content for my healthy food/fitness blog or when I bake something; I identify a need, then create a solution that not only matches that need but surpasses it, resulting in a delighted customer which will then share their happiness with others.”
Being creative is one of the biggest selling points nowadays because people want something that looks and feels different, even in a cupcake. Hannah commented on this, through her current customer experience and her own way of applying creativity to her baking operation ‘Lil Baker’.
“Creativity is very important. Keeping two key-points of ‘presentation and taste’ in mind when I create, I’m very conscious of the composition, visual aesthetics and detailing put into each and every one of my orders which enhances their experience with ‘Lil’ Baker.’ I look to create quality which customers can remember, and share happiness through personalised, unorthodox tastes and designs. Creativity is what your consumers will be coming back for – it is one of the sole reasons your product or service will triumph, as you’ve provided them with something unique, something they cannot find elsewhere.”
In addition to ‘Lil Baker’, Hannah is also a fitness enthusiast. With health and sweets often being at polar opposites, we asked her how she connected the two operations and found sense in working on both. Her first reaction was a laugh.
“Yes, they are indeed complete opposites. I can only explain my passion for baking and fitness in one way; in school, I loved to run and play sport, but also loved to bake and watch my classmates smile as they shared the muffins or cookies I had brought in that day. Baking brings out my creative side, while healthy eating and fitness keeps me on track everyday, and is the one of the major reasons I’m so happy and energised all the time – endorphins are the key!”
Hanna’s work is live online. While she posts healthy recipes every Tuesday on her food and fitness blog, she is also currently trying to add more vegan items to the Lil’ Baker menu. She has dedicated all of March to experimenting with new ingredients, and making healthier alternatives.
“Eating healthy and working out is the best way to a healthy lifestyle and a fitter, stronger body. However, the term ‘everything with moderation,’ couldn’t be truer. Work hard, but do remember to enjoy life – even if that means having a cookie,” she concludes.
