Kandy chalk up successive wins in SLC Super Provincial Tournament

Kandy chalked up successive wins in the ongoing Sri Lanka Cricket Super Provincial Tournament that got underway on April 9. The tournament mooted by SLC in bringing grassroots talent island-wide in to one basket, saw some high scoring matches with three centurions on the first day. Lahiru Milantha scored 106 for Dambulla versus Colombo, and Sri Lanka cricketer Dinesh Chandimal in turn chalked up116 not out for Colombo in a tied encounter with both teams scoring identical scores of 289 in 50 overs.

In the Galle versus Kandy match that yielded 696 runs between the two sides with Kandy scraping through by one wicket, the inform Sri Lanka A prodigy Sadeera Samarawickrama, who has been nudging the selectors for a big call up, struck 109 to bolster Galle to 347 for 7 in 50 overs. However, Kandy held their nerve going down to the wire mustering 349 for 9 with Hashan Dumindu 76 and Charith Asalanka 51 leading the way.

Meanwhile, on day-2, Dasun Shanaka smashed an unbeaten 121 and Sri Lanka Test opener Dimuth Karunaratne 86 in helping Galle to a crushing 188-run win over Colombo in the third match.

In the second match on day-2 saw Kandy register their second victory in the tournament beating Dambulla by 19 runs in another high scoring affair. Kandy piled up 336 for 7 in 50 overs with Sri Lanka T20 player Chamara Kapugedara stroking 102. Other main contributions were from Lahiru Madushanka who made an unbeaten 90 and Ramith Rambukwella an unbeaten 52.

Dambulla replied with 317 in 48 overs with Harsha Cooray making 102 and Sri Lanka cricketer Kusal Mendis 77.
