Mobitel has partnered with Foursquare to introduce a SMS platform that allows its social media savvy non-smart phone using customers’ access to popular social networking site Foursquare. The service allows customers to be active on the site without having to log into it like smart phone and computer users.

Foursquare is a location-based social networking site where its users ‘Check-In’ to venues registered on the site. Foursquare allows users to register places like shops, malls, restaurants and other hot spots, and talk about them or share information about the venue with their friends on the network. The users can update status, check-in to venues and win points for their activities. With over 20 million users world-wide, Foursquare is rapidly gaining in popularity and as at June 2011, registered three million check-ins daily.
To use the Foursquare service, Mobitel users need to log onto www.mobitel.lk/networking-ml and register their mobile number(s). The registration is one-time only and subscription to the service is free. The service is free for a one month trial period and users are charged only Rs.1 + Tax per SMS from 9 May onwards. Mobitel customers can update their locations on Foursquare by texting ‘foursquare @ venue name’ to 4777.
By partnering with Foursquare, the National Mobile Service Provider Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel empowers the many non-smart phone users in Sri Lanka who use the social networking site. The Mobitel Foursquare SMS service is another timely introduction by Mobitel and a step forward in its mission to lead Sri Lanka towards becoming an infocom and knowledge rich society.
