The Sri Lanka Inventors Commission (SLIC) has re-launched its website to promote the value of innovation and draw interests from budding innovators and private sector.
“The SLIC website while providing benefits to the inventors offers unique opportunities to the industry. This is a part of our strategy of creating a conducive environment for inventions,” says Sri Lanka Inventors Commission Chairman Deepal Sooriyaarachchi.

He added: “It intends to showcase inventors and their inventions, help introduce inventors as technical problem solvers to the industry, introduce inventors to investors, businesses, and technical experts, provide a platform for school level inventors to register their ideas, and as a resource centre as well.”
The Sri Lanka Inventors Commission (SLIC) functions under the Ministry of Research and Technology, invites Sri Lankan inventors whether they have patents or not to register with the SLIC website www.slic.gov.lk to reap a number of benefits.
The SLIC website intends to show case Sri Lankan inventors and their inventions through this web site. They can provide details about their inventions, photographs, and even short video clips. If the inventors have their own websites or web pages they too will be linked to this website.
To register an inventor need not have web access. Inventors can contact the commission by phone and the staff will assist in up loading the information and if there are any enquiries about an invention or an inventor they will be passed on within one working day.
The commission has identified that the inventors have a very special capability to look at a situation from a fresh perspective and come up with creative technical solutions. The website has provision to record different capabilities of inventors. Although they may have invented one or two in a certain field they are capable of providing solutions in many other areas as well.
When a business organisation records a technical problem for which they need solution the inventors with compatible technical capabilities will be informed via e mail or SMS immediately. Then the inventor can contact the business organisation directly and agree the steps. There are many industries and organisations that dabble with technical problems without proper solutions and it is intended this inventor industry link will be a real win- win partnership.
This way inventors will be introduced to industry as knowledge partners thus enhancing the chance for the industry to partner with them in commercialising their inventions.
There are a large number of school level inventors clubs. Young Sri Lankan inventors have won awards locally and internationally. SLIC website can be used as their website as well by having a special web page to portray club activities.
Every school club maintains a special register to record the inventions even at idea stage so the ownership to the idea can be certified. SLC Website provides a special platform to record such ideas so that this can be done at a national level. What is recorded will be the key descriptor of the inventive idea not the details
