Voter list registration open until July 15

Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya says the re-evaluation of the 2012 voter list commenced on June 1 and is scheduled to last till July 15. If anyone does not receive an application to include his or her name on the official voter list for the year, then they should contact their respective district election office or download the form from the Department of Elections website.
Those wishing to include the names of persons domiciled overseas can include such persons' passport number in the voter list.
To be eligible to be registered on the voter list, one must be above 18 years of age by June 1 of that year, and of course be a citizen of Sri Lanka. They must also reside at the address stated on the list. Even those residing at residences not their own (on rent for example) are eligible to be included on the voter list. If a landlord refuses to allow tenants to do so, a complaint should immediately be made to the elections commissioner.
Sri Lanka updates its voter list on an annual basis, and no one unregistered will be eligible to cast their vote at any election.
The elections commissioner has also called on political parties to appoint their officials to check on voter lists being completed on a grama seva divisional basis.
He said that political parties also have a responsibility to help the Department of Elections in this endeavour and (he) has already briefed the secretaries of  the mainstream political parties in this regard. According to Deshapriya, voters' enthusiasm for registering on the voter list is lukewarm at best. Most people believed that registering once would suffice for a long time he said.
He also warned that dual residency is a felony; 200,000 voters were struck off the list last year as they held dual residencies. These included ministry secretaries, top politicians and well-known religious leaders.{jcomments on}
