Record number of tourists arrive in Kandy to witness “Perahera”
Sri Lanka’s historic Kandy Esala Perahera which is now ongoing, has seen record number of foreigners arriving in the hill capital to witness the cultural pageant.
Sri Lanka Tourism says around 6000 tourists have visited the sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic and the visitors exceeding a figure of 8000 have watched the row of live pageants touring the streets since the start of the event.
“Almost all city hotels and other places of stay have been occupied more than 80% from the beginning of last week to date”, added Sri Lanka Tourism in a statement issued.
SLT says other service providers related to travel and tourism sector too are getting good business owing to this.
Foreign media channels such as CNN, AFP and NHK also have arrived, to do cover the event.
Authorities expect the number of tourists visiting the hill capital to rise, during the ‘Final Randoli Perahera’ which is scheduled to tour the streets on 1st of August.
