Online carbon footprint calculator launched for hotels

The EU funded Switch Asia Program – Greening Sri Lanka Hotels Project has come out with an initiative for hotels to be able to make a quick calculation based on a uniform methodology, of their carbon emissions.

The carbon footprint calculator estimates the approximate CO2 equivalent emissions, a typical hotel releases by its operations. The individual hotel has to only fill in its usage of electricity (kwh), diesel and petrol (litres) and LP Gas (kg) and furnace oil in the appropriate fields on the web, for a given period of time, together with the corresponding guest nights or room nights.
The online web based application then immediately shows the equivalent CO2 emissions per room night, or guest night as the case maybe. This application was launched recently, and now available for all hotels at the Greening Sri Lanka Hotels website; www.greeningsrilankahotels.org. Project Director Srilal Miththapala said that this would help hotels to evaluate their approximate carbon footprint, and use it for various management and marketing applications. This is a further initiative of Greening Sri Lanka Hotels Project, in helping Sri Lanka Hotels to work towards sustainability consumption practices. So far the Greening Sri Lanka Hotels Project has registered 239 hotels from all regions of Sri Lanka, of which about 140 hotels are SMEs.
