‘Diyatha Uyana’ vested in the public
‘Diyatha Uyana’ constructed on the banks of the Diyawanna Oya to enhance the beauty of the city has been vested in the public.
The park was created on a marshy land between the Parliamentary complex and the Diyawanna Oya at the Polduwa junction. A reservoir was built near the Waters Edge under the programme of constructing a network of reservoirs to control floods in Colombo. The entertainment park was created simultaneously. ‘Diyatha Uyana’ was inaugurated by Minister Basil Rajapaksa last evening. The Army, Navy and the Civil Defence Department contributed in the constructions under the supervision of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa. Sri Lanka Land Reclamation and Development Corporation has carried out the constructions. A musical fountain, the first of its kind in Sri Lanka, is also installed at the park. The park also consists of walking paths, canteens, self employment and flower stalls.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa also participated in the inauguration last evening. The President who visited more than 100 stalls that sell flower plants exchanged views with the traders as well as those who had visited the park. ‘Diyatha Uyana’ which combines natural beauty with modern technology will become an attraction amongst local as well as foreign tourists. Ministers, Parliamentarians, Mayors of Kotte and Kaduwela, Chief of the Defence staff, Commanders of the security forces and senior government officials participated in the occasion.
