SC education team makes case for $300M grant

Mar 16, 2010 12:06:00 PM - thestate.com
South Carolina education officials have made their pitch for a $300 million school reform grant from the U.S. Education Department.

State schools Superintendent Jim Rex and four others presented the state's proposal in Washington on Tuesday to a five-member panel. South Carolina is among 16 finalists picked earlier this month for the first round of the "Race to the Top" competition.

All the finalists are making their presentations this week. The winners will be announced next month.

South Carolina is one of two finalists where union support of a state plan isn't a factor. Teachers aren't unionized in South Carolina.

The $4 billion "Race to the Top" fund is aimed at education reform. A second round of applicants will be accepted in June.
