Service rendered by former ITN Chairman commemorated
The service rendered to the media sector by the former Chairman of ITN and Lakhanda radio and veteran journalist Newton Gunaratne has been commemorated.
Newton Gunaratne who joined the SLBC in 1963 started his media career as a relief announcer. While fulfilling his duties he introduced new parameters to the radio that was confined to a traditional framework. He became the Chairman of ITN and played a major role in launching the Lakhanda radio. He contributed in no small measure to create a new media generation. A felicitation ceremony organised by the first generation of media personnel of the Lakhanda radio was held before a large gathering. A website was also launched to commemorate the 50 year media career of Newton Gunaratne. A statue was also unveiled. General Manager of ITN Aruna Wijesinghe and a large number of media personnel participated in the function.
