Foreign Ministry denies claims Sri Lanka’s envoy to UK resigned
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday denied claims that Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to the UK, Mrs Amari Wijewardene had resigned.
The Foreign Ministry said that High Commissioner Wijewardene will conclude her contract on her own volition by 31 March 2018.
“The reports being circulated in the media attributed to the Secretary to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stating that Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to the UK, Mrs. Amari Wijewardene, has resigned, are incorrect. High Commissioner Wijewardene will conclude her contract on her own volition by 31 March 2018,” the Foreign Ministry said in a brief statement.
Meanwhile, the Defence attached to the Sri Lanka High Commission in London, Brigadier Priyanka Fernando, returned to Sri Lanka today.
Brigadier Priyanka Fernando was seen gesticulating to slit throats of a group of pro-LTTE demonstrators opposite the High Commission office in London on February 4 when the embassy was celebrating the 70th independence day.
He was immediately suspended from work following a video, which showed him behaving in an offensive manner.
However, he was later allowed to resume duties on a presidential directive. (Colombo Gazette)
