Divi Neguma Department will operate from tomorrow
The Divi Neguma Development Department which will strengthen the livelihoods of 1.8 million families will be operative from tomorrow.
Minister Basil Rajapaksa will ink the gazette notification which legalizes the Department.
Five million people from 1.8 million families will benefit by the Divi Neguma Development Department which will be operative under the Ministry of Economic Development. The Divi Neguma Department is operative based on the Mahinda Chinthana Extended Vision. Its aim is to eliminate poverty from Sri Lanka by the year 2016.
Special programmes giving pride of place to religious observances will be held to mark the legalization of the Divi Neguma Development Department tomorrow. The Divi Neguma Department Bill was approved in Parliament with a majority of 117 votes last year, based on a ruling given by the Supreme Court. Accordingly workers of five institutions including the Samurdhi Authority will be entitled to a pension. They will also receive all benefits enjoyed by public sector employees. The Divi Neguma Department will be guided by a Director General.
