Councillor Doug Ford proposes dumping politicians from TTC board

- thestar.com

If he could, Councillor Doug Ford would radically overhaul the makeup of the 11-member Toronto Transit Commission.

Mayor Rob Ford’s brother would fire the seven city councillors on the commission and replace them with seven business people.

There are already four citizens on the commission, but they would all be citizens in Ford’s vision.

“In my opinion, there should be no politicians whatsoever at the TTC,” he told reporters Friday.

Conceding it isn’t going to happen, Ford switched gears and said he’d be interested in becoming a member of the commission.

A vacancy is opening up because the TTC chair, Councillor Karen Stintz, is giving up her post to run for mayor in this year’s election.

The mayor has said he thinks his brother would make a fine addition to the commission.

Councillor Ford, who has repeatedly criticized Stintz, said he’ll throw his hat in the ring but isn’t hopeful of sitting on the commission, let alone being picked to be chair.

“I’d put my name forward but they wouldn’t elect me,” he said. “I’ll throw it out there just for fun because I know they aren’t going to vote for me.”

“They’d rather someone who’s never looked at a P&L (profit and loss) statement in their entire lives — that are a bunch of hokey pokey characters — run it.”
