Accident causes oil spill in Rakwana River
An oil spill has occurred at the Rakwana River, following an accident involving a bowser transporting furnace oil in the Balawinna area on the Embilipitiya – Ratnapura road.
Our reporter says that a large number of families who rely on the waters of the river have been severely inconvenienced as a result. The accident occurred at about 6 o’clock on Thursday morning.
A house nearby was also damaged in the incident. An person who was injured has been hospitalised, and a water line in the area has also been damaged in the incident. The furnace oil in the bowser then began seeping into the river.
The Public Health Inspector in Godakawela has issued instructions that the river’s water not be used in drinking water schemes until further notice.
