The Sri Lankan police Thursday offered to assist India to investigate an alleged kidney racket involving both countries, according to a report by the IANS

There are reports that the Indian police are considering sending a team to Sri Lanka to investigate the alleged racket. However, the Sri Lankan police have not yet been approached for assistance, Xinhua news agency quoted Sri Lankan police spokesperson Ajith Rohana as saying.

“The Sri Lanka police is ready to offer its fullest corporation,” the spokesperson said. He added that while anyone can donate a kidney to another person, if someone is duped into selling a kidney then legal action can be taken under local laws.

Rohana, was quoted as saying  so far police have not received any complaint about kidneys being sold in Sri Lanka but they are monitoring the media reports on the alleged racket.

According to Indian media reports Indian police investigating a kidney racket had said they found 21 people had sold their kidneys to a doctor in Sri Lanka.

Police in Hyderabad have alerted the Indian High Commission in Colombo about the racket and a special team was said to leave for the island nation to further investigate the case, Indian media reports claim.
