Toddler who nearly died when her head swelled to twice its normal size makes amazing recovery
A toddler whose head swelled up to almost double its natural size has defied expectations by not only surviving an operation to reduce it – but also recovering so well that she may be able to start school this year.
Roona Begum, two, required emergency surgery last year after suffering from an extreme form of hydrocephalus, also known as water on the brain.
One year on her rate of recovery has exceeded doctors’ expectations, and she is now well enough to eat and crawl.
Last year surgeons in Delhi had to operate on Roona after diagnosing her with the rare condition, which caused her skull to deform as her head swelled up.
Parents Abdul Rahman, 21, and Fatima Khatun, 23, say that Roona, who previously struggled to hold up the weight of her own head, now interacts with them and smiles. They hope she will be well enough to attend school later this year.
Following the toddler’s amazing recovery doctors are considering performing another operation to further reduce the size of her head.
However, having seen their child spend much of her short life in hospital – and knowing that doctors predict her lifespan will already be dramatically reduced – Roona’s parents are worried about the risks of such a procedure and are debating whether or not to go ahead with it.
