Malinga chooses Mumbai Indians over Sri Lanka’s Southern Express

Lasith Malinga has chosen Mumbai Indians over his Sri Lankan side, Southern Express in the Champions League Twenty20 cricket tournament, scheduled to be played in September.

Issuing a media release, SLC states that Malinga had written to CEO Ashley De Silva, requesting to represent the Mumbai Indians in the Champions League T20 – 2014.

SLC states that the request letter had been tabled at the Exco meeting held July 22nd, as per the Team Participation Agreement of CLT20 – 2014, stating that the decision on which team a player should represent is the sole prerogative of the player himself.

Accordingly whilst expressing Sri Lanka Cricket’s preference for Lasith to represent the Southern Express Team at the said event, the Executive Committee left this decision at his sole discretion.

Nishantha Ranatunga, the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Secretary said that the pacer had a talk with the officials and had conveyed his wish to play for the Indian team.

We wanted him to play for Southern Express. But Malinga wanted to play for the Mumbai Indians.

He said in terms of the existing contracts entered by the SLC with IPL, Champions League and the local players, the players are being given the option to make their own choice about which team they should represent.

Malinga captained the Southern Express to win the local Super 4s T20 competition.
