COL doubled during Rajapaksa regime – NTUC
The cost of living that was Rs.25343/- when Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa came to power has now doubled to Rs.50792/- and there hasn’t been any increase in the basic salary of employees since 2006 states the National Trade Union Center (NTUC) demanding the government to take steps to provide a salary increase proportionate to the increasing cost of living.
The letter sent to the President by the President of NTUC K.D. Lal Kantha further states the cost of living allowance which is about Rs.10300/- attached to the salary of state employees cannot be used effectively.
The letter warns that the trade union movement would prepare the working masses to take trade union actions to win their rights if the government does not take measures to provide a salary increase on a par with the living index in June, 2014 which was 181.4 and the cost of living which is Rs.50792/-
