'Ranaviru Doo Daru' Educational Scholarships for children of War Heroes
A group of children of Ranaviru families were awarded with 'Ranaviru Doo Daru' Educational Scholarships at a function held at the Ministry premises today (29Th August).
The scholarships were awarded by the Seva Vanitha Unit (SVU) of the Ministry under the patronage of its Chairperson Mrs. Ioma Rajapaksa.
This is the 16th phase of the scholarship awarding programme. A total of 93 children received scholarships under three categories. Students in grade 1 to 5 received Rs. 20,000.00 and children studying in grade 6 to 8 received Rs. 30,000.00, while children studying in grade 9 and above received Rs. 50,000.00. Children belonging to 67 army, 13 navy and 13 air force 'Ranaviru' families received these educational incentives.
In addition, the children were presented with Bank Saving Passbooks, school bags and stationary packs.
The 'Ranaviru Doo Daru Scholarship Programme' is initiated by the SVU of the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development to provide financial support for the education of needy children of the deceased/disabled personnel of Army, Navy, Air Force, Police and the Civil Defence Force.
The scholarship programme is a brain child of Mrs. Ioma Rajapaksa, Chairperson of the MOD SVU. It was first started in 2009 with the assistance of the Bank of Ceylon which provided scholarships to 14 Ranaviru children. So far a total of Rs. 20 million worth of scholarships have been awarded as educational assistance to Ranaviru children.
The aim of the project is to ensure a bright future for the children whose parents have made the supreme sacrifice during the humanitarian operations to safeguard the country from the ravages of terrorism.
Deputy Chairperson of the MOD (SVU) Mrs. Indu Rathnayake, heads of Seva Vanitha Units of the tri-forces, senior tri forces officers were also present at the occasion.(MoD/KH)
