253 incidents of violence & violations reported – NEM IHR
253 incidents of election violence and violations have been reported by yesterday (31st) morning states the Network for Election Monitoring of the Intellectuals for Human Rights (NEM IHR). A communiqué released by the NEM IHR with the signature of its Chief Executive Dr. Uditha Gunasekera states, “Attacks on 12 election offices of the opposition parties contesting the election during the last 48 hours indicate that election violence that is being committed in relation to the Uva PC election is intensifying.
Among the 253incidents of violence and violations that have been reported by the morning of 31.08.2014 are 117 incidents of illegal propaganda, 48 incidents of violence, 14 incidents of improper use of state resources, 20 instances of the use of state power, 15 incidents that create undue influence on public opinion, 4 instances of police partiality, 34 instances of obstruction to legal propaganda and one unnamed incident.
Out of the 253 incidents 178 have been reported from Monaragala and 75 from Badulla District. Despite violence is spreading throughout the province police or election officials have not taken appropriate steps to curb them states NEM IHR.
