Lives of the people destroyed in Uva Wellassa due to land Pillage
During the last few years the land rights of the people in Uva Wellassa region have been neglected when their farm land and the adjoining forest land has been sold to foreign multinational companies and large corporations with the involvement of politicians. Because of these actions massive issues have ocurred in these areas such as water shortage, limitation of cultivatable land and fatal confrontations between man and elephants. It was revealed in a study done by Environmental heritage body, National fisheries corporation movement, Peoples aspiration network, Movement for restoration of National land and agriculture, Savisthra Organisation and Sri Lanka Nature collective under the directive of the People’s coalition for land rights, that the Uva Wellassa farming community has given up agriculture altogether.
