Health Authorities ban milk powder advertisements
The Health Ministry authorities have banned telecast, broadcast and publish of all milk powder advertisements over electronic and print media.
According to the spokesman and Health Services Director General Dr. Palitha Mahipala the decision to ban milk advertisements have been conveyed to the producers and importers of milk powder.
Dr.Mahipala said that the decision to ban milk powder advertisements was taken consequent to the discussion held recently by the Health Ministry Food Advisory Committee members with regard to milk powder advertisements.
The Committee members having noticed that the milk powder advertisements promote myths, inaccuracies and theories which mislead consumers with regard to growth in children with the use of milk powder had taken the decision.
The Spokesman while saying that breast milk which has the highest capability to increase children’s IQ and immunity is the best for children added that it is now universally recognized there is no commercial formula that can equal breast milk.(KH)
