Vijaya College Matale, St. Anthony’s Kandy win Blue & Gold Hockey 7s

Vijaya College, Matale and St. Anthony’s College Kandy emerged boys and girls champions respectively in the Blue and Gold Hockey 7s concluded over the weekend at the Royal College hockey grounds.
In the cup finals, Vijaya College, which was the 1st runner up in the last three consecutive years beat St. Sylvester College Kandy by 2-1 after leading by 1-0 at the half time. In the girls’ category, St. Anthony’s College edged out Vishaka Vidyalaya Colombo with a solitary goal in the extra time after a scoreless final.

Last year’s boys’ champion Wesley lost to St. Sylvester in the semi final, while 2103 girls’ champions Janadhipathi Balika Vidyalaya also lost in the semi final to Vishaka Vidyalaya, Colombo. Both Wesley and Janadhipathi Balika ended as third runner up this year.
Vijaya College remained unbeaten in the tournament, organised by the Royal College Hockey Club for the 12th consecutive year. The tournament was sponsored by Singer (Sri Lanka) Plc and co-sponsored by ESOFT Metro Campus.
On their way to finals, Vijaya College beat Dharmadutha College, Badulla by 4-0, Prince of Wales College, Moratuwa by 2-0, Kingswood College, Kandy, by 2-1, Joseph Vaz College, and Wennappuwa by 3-1. In the quarter final, the Matale school outclassed its neighbour Christ Church College by 2-0 and in the semi-final it won against another nearby team Zahira Matale by 3-2 via penalties after a scoreless end.
M.D. Weerarathne of St. Sylester’s College, Kandy was adjudged as the most outstanding player of the tournament, while Damith Thilakarathne of Vijaya College was awarded as the best goal keeper of the tournament.

In the girls’ category, St. Anthony’s Girls College first lost to Yasodara Balika Vidyalaya, Colombo by 0-1. However, in the second match between the two schools, Kandy lads won the Colombo school by 4-0.  Then St. Anthony’s Girls College beat Ladies College, Colombo by 2-0 before beating Pushpadana Girls College by 1-0 through penalty strokes after a goalless quarter final.
In the semi final, St. Anthony’s won against Seethadevi Balika Vidyalaya, Kandy by 1-0 through penalties.
Sandunika Devagiri and Tharumini Abeykoon of St. Anthony’s College were adjudged most of outstanding player and the best goal keeper of the tournament in the girls’ category.

Plate 3rd place: Sirimavo Bandaranayake Vidyalaya, Colombo beat Pushpadana Girls College (3-0)
Bowl final: Musaeus College beat Yasodara Balika Vidyalaya (1-0)
Bowl 3rd place: Bishops College beat Sri Sumangala Balika Vidyalaya (1-0)
