No political pressure for lifting of the ban on the LTTE
The European Union has stated that the decision to lift the ban on the LTTE is a court’s decision and not a political one. Issuing a statement, the office of the European Union in Colombo states that the decision to lift the ban is a legal one.
A few days ago, the court of the EU handed down a verdict overturning the previous decision by the Europa council to include the LTTE organisation as a terrorist organisation, on the basis of the process followed at that time was unacceptable. This was after sympathizers of the LTTE launched a court challenge against this decision
and named the Europa council, Europa commission, the Netherlands and Britain as accused. LTTE sympathizers claimed that the LTTE’s armed struggle should come under the human rights law framework not the anti-terrorism laws. But the decision has stressed that any future attempt to collect funds will be prohibited under this decision.
