The whole system has to be changed, not only the executive presidency – Pubudu Jayagoda
Front Line Socialist Party Politburo member Pubudu Jayagoda says that while the present system should be changed, that change should not be limited to abolishing the executive presidency but be replaced by a system where the people have the power to make their own decisions. He expressed these views at a conference held by that party on Monday (20) at the new town hall auditorium in Colombo. This conference was organized to introduce the party’s political programme named ‘Wame Piyawara’. This programme has proposals regarding the economy, constitution, foreign policy and the national question.
FLSP politburo member Duminda Nagamuwa expressing his views, said:
'No action has been taken against the Bower, CIC companies which are responsible for the kidney disease related deaths in the North Central province. What is the agricultural policy of Lanka? A Seeds Act was brought forth. These are the results of the green revolution.
Now, 36% of the workers work for more than 50 hours per week. What is the fate of Lankans working in foreign countries? 2 million workers out of the 8.4 million workers, live outside the country. man-power companies are exploiting the Lankan labourer. What has befallen the students? Student are fighting against privatization and are met with repression.
The majority of the wealthiest 25 in Lanka, are financial companies. Their job is to give away loans wherever it’s possible. 1/3rd of the population above the age of 55 are still working to earn a live hood.
The government uses repression to manage this situation politically. They use chauvinism. The FSP is against this repression.'
FSP politburo member Pubudu Jayagoda expressing his views, said:
'What should we do?, is a burning question within the lower stratums of the societies oppressed. After the fall of Soviet Russia, Francis Fukuyama writes that history has ended, and that there is nothing else beyond liberal democracy and capitalism. We ask you, do you accept this as the ultimate fate or would you search for an alternative? Engels said, it is either transition to Socialism or regression into Barbarism. Today, the majority of child abuses are committed at home. People are searching for food all day long. When they can’t support their children, they resort to killing them. This cannot be solved by making small changes to the constitution. This is why socialism is the answer. We are not prepared to accept this fate for these people.
Is it Socialism, or is it Capitalism that is Utopian? Some say if we work more, everything will be fine. An illusion is created to state that you can make it if you work more. This is what is Utopian. Socialism is a society which values society instead of capital.
