Asian Monitors Invited For The Election
Asian monitors have been approached and invited for the Presidential elections expected to be held in January, the People’s Action For Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) said.
PAFFREL Executive Director Rohana Hettiarachchi said that 35 Asian monitors will be deployed for the polls apart from local monitors and other international monitors.
Among the Asian monitors expected in Sri Lanka are monitors from India, Thailand, the Philippines, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal and Afghanistan.
Hettiarachchi said that Asian monitors were invited following discussions held with the Elections Commissioner.
The Asian monitors are expected to be in Sri Lanka for two weeks and will monitor the pre and post polls environment as well as the election.
The Commonwealth Secretariat had said recently that Commonwealth monitors will also be in Sri Lanka for the Presidential elections.
