Mahinda’s backers accept his defeat
A weekend newspaper connected to Rajapaksa family has published that Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa would receive 48% of the votes. Despite stating the figure had been obtained through a survey conducted, no accepted sources have been mentioned.
The newspaper states Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa would win the election obtaining 48% of the votes. However, political analysts say constitutionally it is not possible to win the election by polling only 48% of the votes and the intention of publishing such a news item is to mend the diminishing mentality of Rajapaksa supporters.
As it is evident that Mr. Rajapaksa cannot win the election with a larger percentage but attempting to confirm to Rajapaksa supporters that he would win with a small majority will bring a negative result point out political analysts.
They say with the withdrawal of Mr. Maithripala Sirisena and the group a huge breakdown from top to bottom has occurred in the UPFA government. As a result Mr. Maithripala Sirisena would achieve an easy victory analysts point out.
