India’s Nirma University invites IPM to share insights on HRM

The Nirma Institute of Management of India’s prestigious Nirma University based in Ahmedabad invited members of the Institute of Personnel Management (IPM) – Sri Lanka’s pioneering Human Resources Management Institute – to share their experience, insights and present papers on Human Resources Management at their annual Nirma International Conference on Management (NICOM).

Nirma University’s Institute of Management – which has been consistently ranked amongst the top 20 business schools in India by various surveys – was set up in 1996 with the objective of promoting excellence in management education and prepare young men and women to meet the contemporary challenges of the corporate world. The annual Nirma International Conference on Management attracts academics and practicing managers from across the world.
The theme of this year’s conference held from 8-10 January 2015 was ‘Transforming HR for Enhanced Organisational Capability’ highlighting the role and importance of human resource practices and CSR in a dynamic business environment. Over the years, the conference has gained in stature and is considered as an important event by the Academia and practicing industry fraternity.
Several senior academics and human resources professionals including IPM President and Head of Human Resources of Pan Asia banking Corporation PLC (PABC) Rohitha Amarapala, Managing Partner of Cormarcom and IPM Honorary Member Dr. Asoka Jinadasa, Senior Lecturer of the University of Kelaniya and Consultant Academic Affairs/Associate Member of IPM Dr. Prasadini Gamage, Manager Private Sector Relationship of the World University Service of Canada and Associate Member IPM Timothy Edward, Lecturer/Consultant and Associate Member of IPM Thusitha Thilak Devendra and Corporate Trainer/HR Consultant and Associate Member of IPM Genevieve Gunawardhana participated at the conference.
“We are honoured by the invitation from Nirma University to participate in this international conference to share our thoughts and insights on human resources management which also reflects the recognition that IPM – as the foremost Human Resources Management Institute in Sri Lanka – enjoys in the South Asian region,” said Rohitha Amarapala.
“We were able to interact and engage with practicing managers as well as academics in the HR field in India. While we were able to share our professional and academic experience with them through the papers that were presented and the discussions held, we were also able to gain valuable knowledge and insights of human resources management from an Indian perspective as well. Furthermore, as we were able to build valuable relationships at this conference, we together with Nirma University and the Indian HR fraternity are planning to work towards an annual exchange program between India and Sri Lanka which will be centred around this conference,” he added.
Special papers themed ‘How can HR Effectively Contribute to Business Excellence’ and ‘Organisational Justice and Organisational Citizenship Behaviour: The Mediating Role of Organisational Commitment’ were presented by Timothy Edward and Dr. Prasadini Gamage respectively which provided practical insights related to the conference theme.
IPM was founded in 1959, with the objective of developing the profession of Personnel Management. Subsequently the institute was incorporated by an Act of Parliament in 1976. With the small beginnings in 1959 the institute has developed to be the leading Human Resource authority in Sri Lanka in line with the mandate given by Parliament. The institute has contributed significantly to develop and nurture the Human Resource Management profession in the country.
IPM is affiliated to the Asia Pacific Foundation of Human Resources Management and also to the World Federation of People Management Association. IPM, being a professional institute is also a constituent member of the Organisation of Professional Associations (OPA) Sri Lanka. Currently IPM comprises of over 900 professional members who serve in both public and private organisations, as well as approximately 7,000 students who follow the diverse programs on human resources offered by IPM and its regional study centres throughout the country.
