Missing Persons Commission seeks meeting with President on future proceedings

The Chairman of the Presidential Commission to Investigate Complaints Regarding Missing Persons, Maxwell Paranagama has sought a time with the new President Maithripala Sirisena to discuss the future proceedings of the Commission.

Mr. Paranagama told Lankapuvath that the Commission plans on making an interim report on the inquiries they have currently completed.

 

According to the Chairman, the Commission is continuing to function without break amid the election of a new President and currently investigations into filed reports and received evidence are underway.

 

Since the Establishment of the Commission on 15th August 2013, the Commission up to date has received in excess of 19,671 complaints inclusive of approximately 5,000 complaints from relatives of missing security forces personnel.

 

The Commission will accept new reports while working on already reported incidents, the Chairman said.
The Commission is extended on six-month basis and after the last extension the validity period ends on the 15th of February.

 

The Commission was appointed by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa on 14 August 2013. It is mandated to inquire into and report on alleged abductions or disappearances during the period June 10, 1990, to May 19, 2009.

 

The three-member Commission, chaired by Attorney Paranagama, comprises former Director General of Census and Statistics Priyanthi Suranjana Vidyaratne and former member of the Monetary Board of Sri Lanka Manohari Ramanathan.
