Bribery complaint against Shiranthi Rajapaksa
Ms. Shyamali Perera, the wife of former DIG Vass Gunawardene who has been remanded as a suspect of a murder, has filed a complaint against former first lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa.
The complaint was filed today (26th) regarding an incident in which Mrs. Shiranth Rajapaksa had attempted to sell 100 kilos of gold from the Treasury.
Speaking to the media Mrs. Perera said when her husband was the DIG in charge of Colombo North he received information from Army intelligence section that 100 kilograms of gold from the Treasury worth about Rs.500 million was to be sold fraudulently.
“When investigations were carried out the name of President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s wife too was mentioned as a person involved in the racket. Later, my husband was arrested and remanded. My son too was arrested. I and my family were continuously threatened not to reveal the racket. I was told my husband would not be allowed to get released from prison if I revealed the gold affair,” said Mrs. Perera.
Meanwhile, there was talk that the racket was carried out together by the wife of Vaas Gunawardene and Mrs. Shiranthi Rajapaksa but a dispute sprang up when the spoils were to be divided. Also, there are complaints that Vaas Gunawardene family used police powers unlawfully.
