Shirani assumed duties today, resigns tomorrow
Dr. Shirani Bandaranayaka,Who commenced her duties as the Chief Justice today (28th) has decided to resign from the post tomorrow. This was revealed by the President of BASL Upul Jayasuriya. The Government removed all obstacles for Chief Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranayaka to hold her position as the 43rd Chief Justice of Sri Lanka.
Dr. Shirani Bandaranayaka, arrived at the Hulftsdorp Court Complex today morning and was welcomed by President of Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) Upul Jayasuriya. She was expected to continue as the Chief Justice. Mohan Peiris, controversially appointed as chief justice by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has been forced to resign from the post.
Shirani Anshumala Bandaranayake ( born April 1958) was the 43rd[1] Chief Justice of Sri Lanka. Although a qualified lawyer, she has never practiced law. After university Ms. Bandaranayake entered academia, holding a number of senior positions at the University of Colombo, including Associate Professor of Law and the Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Colombo. She was first appointed to the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka in 1996, becoming Sri Lanka's first female Supreme Court Judge. Ms. Bandaranayake was appointed chief justice in May 2011 following the mandatory retirement of Asoka de Silva. She was controversially impeached by Parliament and then removed from office by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa in January 2013.
