Vigorous attempt made to deport Kumar Gunaratman…
Front Line Socialist Party Politburo member, Kumar Gunaratnam was re-summoned to the Department of Immigration and Emigration yesterday (29), where an attempt was made by the Immigration and Emigration officials to arrest him. Afterwards upon the intervention of his lawyers, the officials were compelled to halt their attempt to arrest him.
Kumar Gunaratnam was first summoned to the Department of Immigration and Emigration on Wednesday (28) to obtain a statement. On Wednesday he was questioned regarding his immigration, and yesterday the department officials told him that it is unlawful for him to engage in politics in Lanka. However, he stated that he has been forced to emigrate on a few occasions due to engaging in politics, and similarly the reason for his arrival is also to engage in politics. He further stated that he will continue to engage in politics within Lanka, and that no one has the right to stop him from exercising his right.
Upon an inquiry made by us, Kumar Gunaratnam stated that without showing any consideration for the acts of serious crimes, murders, abductions and arbitrary arrests that occurred throughout history, the eagerness shown in this particular issue is questionable. He further said that the those who left the country due to threats io their lives must be given the opportunity to return to the country without any hindrance, and questioned whether it is good governance to ask those who arrived in this country in that situation, to again leave.
However, Kumar Gunaratnam has been once again re-summoned to the Department of Immigration and Emigration today (30) for another statement.
