Every year, the devotees from the North and East arrive in a “Pada Yatra” to participate in the Kataragama Esala Festival. The Esala festival will be held on Monday. About 800 devotees who had arrived in a “Pada Yatra” had already reached the Kataragama Sacred city. It took about 20 days for these pilgrims to reach the Sacred city. The Basnayake Nilame of the Kataragama devale Sashendra Rajapaksa said around 50,000 devotees are expected to arrive in Kataragama for the festival. He pointed out that they are implementing a special programme in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Army to provide them drinking water and sanitary facilities for the pilgrims.
