Port City temporarily closed
The cabinet has approved the close down of the ‘Port City’ project temporarily. This is as a result of a cabinet paper presented yesterday (4th) by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Before the presidential election Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe as well as Mr. Maithripala Sirisena promised in election meetings that ‘Port City’ project would be abandoned. As no action was taken to close down the project which has violated marine regulations as well as environmental laws, the JVP Leader Anura Dissanayaka declared the JVP would mediate to close down the project.
At present organizations to protect the environment have launched protest activities for the project and held an agitation against continuing the project despite promises made during the election campaign.
