SLPA terminals fully occupied during seasonal holidays

Apr 16, 2018 11:03:13 PM - thesundayleader.lk

Operations at the Jaya Container Terminal (JCT) during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year Season.

With 100 per cent attendance of operations and all other supportive staff  during  Sinhala and Tamil New Year season, and especially on April 13 and 14, 2018, the Jaya Container Terminal (JCT) and the Unity Container Terminal (UCT) of Sri Lanka Ports Authority were competitive and successful in keeping  all its berths fully occupied.

On April 13, 2018,  the JCT and the UCT  together handled 7,459 TEUs whilst the two terminals recorded handling of 6,259 TEUs on April 14, 2018. With the deployment of 20 STS cranes at the JCT and 18 at the UC, SLPA has operated 5 mother vessels and 8 feeder vessels during the two days.

The JCT itself handled 2,010,702 TEUS out of the total volume of 6,209,068 TEUs at the Port of Colombo in 2017. Compared to the 1st quarter 2017, JCT has recorded a growth of 15.3% during the 1st quarter 2018.

The Drewry Port Connectivity Index at its most recent release had ranked the Port of Colombo as the 13th best Connectivity Port in the world for the 4th quarter 2017, up by 05 places from its previous positioning of ranks. According to the rankings the Port of Colombo is also the top best connectivity port in South Asia.

Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)  with the terminals of the Port of Colombo to operate collectively to promote the Port of Colombo.

Under the leadership of Minister of Ports and Shipping, Mahinda Samarasinghe, and instructions by the Chairman of Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) Dr. Parakrama Dissanayake the positive increase at SLPA controlled terminals and especially the Jaya Container Terminal (JCT) is reasoned towards direct and straight forward decisions reached by the Management, that has also won employee recognition and credibility for such implementations. The Jaya Container Terminal (JCT), owned and operated by Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA), has expressed steady growth of operating volumes since October 2017.

The recognition of credibility towards the management has encouraged the employees of SLPA to dedicatedly contribute towards efficient service along with collaborative support by all parties and stakeholders engaged in the port operations to keep SLPA’s productivity at a steadily and sustainably increasing rate. Creating history, the Port of Colombo for the first time has recorded 6.2 million container operations in December last year.
