Sri Lanka to switch off lights today for Earth Hour

Sri Lankans are requested to join hundreds of millions of people from around the world, by participating in the Earth Hour initiative and showing their commitment to preserving the planet. Today at 8.30 p.m. homes, schools, businesses and iconic landmarks across the planet will turn off their lights for the appointed one hour, entitled Earth Hour .
This act will enable Sri Lankans to be a part of a global celebration of the planet.
Now in its ninth year, the annual event has grown from a single-city initiative in 2007 to become the world’s largest display of environmental action.
Earth Hour itself does not strive to directly solve the problem of climate change by reducing energy consumption but is a symbolic gesture that unites people and lets them convey to the world that they are willing to make a personal sacrifice to reduce global warming and climate change.
Earth Hour Sri Lanka 2015 encourages individuals, businesses and corporates to show leadership through their actions by embracing environmental solutions. People are invited to use the Earth Hour platform to show the world the vital role that Sri Lankans were playing to reduce their environmental impact on the planet.
You can pledge your support on www.earthhour.lk, join the movement and share your stories on the official Earth Hour Sri Lanka page www.facebook.com/EarthHourSriLanka.
You can also share your Earth Hour photos with the Earth Hour Sri Lanka team by sending them to earthhoursl@gmail.com. Each Earth Hour participant (individual or organisation) will be allowed a quota of six photos. Photos should be sent in by 10:00 p.m. local time if they are to be considered for use on the Earth Hour Global Media Centre.
The Earth Hour 2015 team recommends that participants zip multiple files together into one single file before sending them. If all six files cannot be sent at once, participants can send each picture in multiple messages.
This following strict file-naming structure should be followed before photos are attached. Each image file should be named as follows: (Sri Lanka)_(City)_(Subject – name of landmark, performance, kids, etc.) (Type of file). For example, if you send an image of an event at Majestic City in Colombo, then you need to save the image as: Sri Lanka_Colombo_Majestic City Switch Off Event_Copyright Earth Hour Sri Lanka.
Earth Hour began in Sri Lanka in 2010 and has since gathered support from all Government institutions and many private institutions. Sri Lanka is to join millions around the world in turning off all its non-essential lights today at 8:30 p.m. to show the nation’s commitment towards building a sustainable future.
