Imparting His Revelation
By Sadhana Senanayake
There are very few people in the world who can say that they have found their purpose in life, but Julius Mitchell, you can say that he has found his.
After first finding music as a boy soprano, Julius became intrigued by acappella music, which led him to his true calling beatboxing. “Beatboxing is an extension of singing; it’s an extension of communication.” He says, “I consider it a universal language because everyone understands sound.”
After initial resistance from his family, Julius has now got their full support, and has set up his own studio at home and also teaches students at the David Academy of Performing Arts.
“I don’t teach like a normal teacher,” He says, “I encourage my students to find their own way, to emit a vibration that is truly theirs.” Julius knows the importance of giving good teachers, he himself being tutored by the likes of Marianne David, “I gathered a lot of information from the teachers in my life. I gathered energy from them, and then made something more out of it. That’s what I want for my students, to take what I give them, and do something even greater out it.”
Julius has now performed at major events in Sri Lanka, such as FIA “Ignite Your Passion”, and performed on the international stage too, wowing crowds with his amazing talent. He has also teamed up with local artists such as Prince Leone, and collaborated with other young artists to make music that is truly groundbreaking and unique.
His success can be attributed to one fact, the fact that he is truly devoted to his craft, committed to working towards perfection. Speaking about the initial spark that led him to where he is today, he says, “I wanted to wrap my mind around the harmonies, figure out the connection between the vibrations of your voice and your soul.”
It is this passion that he passes on to his students, invoking and inspiring a whole new generation of talented musicians.
Julius is now branching out and looking to take his beatboxing to another level. He is now aiming to take in part in the World Beatbox Championship 2015 and to be the sole representative of Sri Lanka. It is a prestigious competition, held once every 3 years, with participants from all over the world.
“At the moment I am trying to get the word out, so that I could get into the competition.” Says Julius, “I really want to represent our country and embody the true Lankan Lion spirit! Show the world what Sri Lanka really has to offer!”
