Maithri commences debate on 19th A
President Maithripala Sirisena commencing the debate on the 19th amendment to the Constitution in Parliament today (27th) said it was a historical privilege for him to be able to present the amendment.
He said the amendment would be adopted on the 28th adding that the SLFP opposed the arbitrary powers in the executive presidency. He said, “In 1999 the UNP also stated that arbitrary powers in the executive presidency should be removed. Despite many governments that came to power promised to remove these powers, they failed to do so.
Mahinda Rajapaksa administration too clearly said the arbitrary powers should be removed. Even school children appreciate establishing independent commissions and democratic rights.”
