Freed Lankan fishermen to return
The Department of Fisheries says the group of Sri Lankan fishermen who were freed from the custody of Myanmar authorities will arrive in the country in the next few days.
Assistant Director of the Fisheries Department, Lal De Silva said the group had already departed from Myanmar, and are heading towards Sri Lanka.
The 17 Sri Lankan fishermen, along with three fishing vessels were taken into custody in October last year, after they allegedly violated Myanmar’s international maritime boundary.
Meanwhile, sixteen Sri Lankan fishermen in the custody of Indian authorities are to arrive in the country today.
Assistant Director of the Fisheries Department, Lal De Silva said the Indian Coast Guard are to hand over the fishermen to the Sri Lanka Navy on Friday morning, following which the Navy would bring the group of fishermen to Kankesanthurai.
