I am not a king – President Sirisena in Polonnaruwa (Watch Video)
President Maithripala Sirisena reiterated that his purpose was not to become a king but to bring about a political, social and economic transformation in the country.
He made this statement at an event held at the Sri Shakya Bhimbarama Viharaya in Pulasthigama, Polonnaruwa on Saturday.
He also noted that even though that he is the head of state, 732 years after the Polonnaruwa Kingdom, that he is not a king and neither does he wish to act as a president vested with limitless power.
He further noted that Nelson Mandela became President after spending 27 yeas in prison but only remained as president for four years and that if a person becomes President after spending 27 years in prison, in Sri Lanka, it will be said that they achieved it after 27 years of hardship and therefore they should be allowed to remain in power for 127 years – and that is how the country has been conditioned.
The president also paid a visit to the Maduru Oya Reservoir, on Saturday May 23 and had made inquiries from the relevant engineers. The president instructed that maintenance work be carried out without delay and that steps be taken to expedite the construction of the dam.
