President Maithripala Sirisena made a statement during a meeting with officers of the Sri Lanka Wildlife and Nature Protection Society and stated that the procedure followed by the previous regime with regard to the Wilpattu Reserve, cannot be condoned.
The Sri Lanka Wildlife and Nature Protection Society, presented a copy of the 25th anniversary edition of their Sinhala Publication Warana, to President Maithripala Sirisena at the Presidential Secretariat on Monday, May 25. The Society also presented several proposals on Environment and Wildlife Conservation to the president.
President Sirisena stated that he does not agree with the decisions taken by the previous government with regard to the area of the Wilpattu Reserve in Mannar. A task force was appointed and lands in the Reserve belonging to the Forest Conservation Department, were given resettlement.
He went on to note that Sri Lanka only contains jungles in areas that were affected by the war but because of the war they were left alone. If not for the war those too would have disappeared, he said.
He further added that Forest Conservation Department, the Ministry of Environment and Wildlife and themselves, hope to introduce a new programme on reforestation and environment conservation.
