Hospital workers engaged in strike action to return to work (Watch Video)
Hospital workers engaging in the strike action, launched a protest march from the Ministry of Health to the Lipton roundabout, on Wednesday afternoon. The health workers then marched back to the Ministry of Health and demonstrated opposite the Ministry premises.
The strike action was launched on Tuesday, citing ten demands which included the payment of salary arrears and providing the special allowance of Rs.3000. The All Ceylon Health Service Union stated that around 40,000 health workers of thirty grades took part in the strike action.
The strike action severely affected the functions at Out Patient Departments at several hospitals and also had a debilitating effect on surgeries and other services. Measures were taken to curtail the effects of the strike action by calling for the assistance of the security forces to keep hospitals functional.
President of the Union, Samantha Koralearachchi stated that following discussions earlier Wednesday evening, trade Unions have decided to call of the strike and report to work on Thursday morning.
Minister of Health,Dr. Rajitha Senaratne stated that it was only one trade union behaved in this manner and this is disappointing as a former member of the trade unions of the health services sector. He further noted that it is also disappointing that the trade unions stooped so low however it is on a happier note that at least now it has been decided to conclude the strike action by 6 am tomorrow, because there is also a need to save lives while fighting for rights.
