Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Rajitha Senaratne says the President and Prime Minister have decided to hold further discussions on the proposed 20th Amendment to the Constitution and make a decision on its future.

The Minister noted that the matter was taken up for discussion at the cabinet meeting held on Wednesday May 28. The draft which proposes the abolition of the preferential voting system and the election of 255 MPs based on a mixed electoral system has been prepared at present.

While a cabinet sub-committee has been appointed to study the draft, discussions are underway on a final proposal. Speaking on the matter, Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala de Silva noted that the 20th Amendment must be brought before Parliament and adopted.  He also said that all party leaders were in agreement and a promise was made that the fullest support will be given for the passage of the 20th Amendment.

Meanwhile, MP Sunil Handunnetti who is a politburo member of the JVP noted that the people are hoping for an MP who is accountable to them and each village. He further added that representatives who can legislate as per the policies suitable for the country, must come from each party.

Meanwhile, the Leader of the New Sama Samaja Party Dr. Wickremebahu Karunaratne stated that there is an attempt to replace the proportional representation electoral system, disregarding its fairness and that this “conspiratorial plan” will not be agreed upon by them. MP of the UPFA Mahindananda Aluthgamage too spoke on giving support for the 20th Amendment but noted that the election must be held under the new election system proposed by the 20th Amendment.

Furthermore, Executive Director of CaFFE, Keerthi Tennakoon, stated that he has great faith that the 20th Amendment will be tabled in Parliament  next week and that it will be passed through the parliament procedure, with the necessary changes being made.
