UPDATED: Colombo High Court acquits Kotakethana dual murder suspects
The three suspects in the 2012 double homicide of a mother and daughter in Kotakethana , Kahawatte, were acquitted by the Colombo High Court on Thursday May 28 in a hearing which was presided over by the Colombo High Court Judge Devika De Livera.
The two charred bodies of 63-year-old L.G. Premawathie and her 33-year-old daughter G. Pushpakumari were discovered from inside a house in Kotakethana, Kahawatte on July 19 2012.
Police filed cases at the Colombo High Court against three suspects, Namal Chaminda Silva, Sisira Priyantha and Lokugamhewage Mithila over the double homicide.
Defence Counsel, Attorney-at-Law, U.R. De Silva noted that the police had purposely included the defendants into this case and that the police had filed cases against three innocent persons. He also stated that he is disappointed that the real suspect is not among the living.
Defense Councel, Attorney-at-Law Dharshana Kuruppu stated that the DNA reports revealed that the six (06) women who were killed, were killed by the same person.
Police Media Spokesperson ASP Ruwan Gunasekera noted that DNA tests were conducted on a number homicide cases of which, suspects have been arrested and the legal process is being undertaken. He also noted that if the evidence causes any suspicions the ruling moves in favour of the accused.
When questioned on the arrest of the real killer, ASP Ruwan stated that there is no possibility to relaunch an investigation on the murder. Twelve (12) women have been killed in Kahawatte, Ratnapura since April 2011. Most of the victims had been tortured prior to their deaths.
