Leaders of the United People’s Freedom Alliance held a meeting with President Maithripala Sirisena on Wednesday May 27. A media briefing was held in Colombo on Thursday to create awareness on the decisions reached during this meeting.

During the press conference, General Secretary of the UPFA, Susil Premajayantha noted that contesting in the election as an alliance was discussed and that the parties in the alliance were informed in writing to submit their nominations at the district level. The General Secretary of UPFA also noted that the matter of how the former president will be involved in the UPFA at the upcoming election, was also discussed during the meeting.

UPFA MP Kumara Welgama too spoke at the press conference. He stated that all the leaders had met with the former president on Thursday morning as they discussed the process of working together as leaders of the UPFA.

Meanwhile, MP Mahindananda Aluthgamage says that 85 MPs have signed the No Confidence Motion against the Prime Minister and the government. He noted that it would be submitted to Parliament on  June 9, adding that once the motion is passed the President will have to either offer the position of Prime Minister to the opposition or call for parliamentary elections.

Addressing a separate media briefing, Leader of the New Sama Samaja Party Dr. Wickremebahu Karunaratne noted that ‘outsiders’ such as Wimal Weerawansa and Dinesh Gunawardena are speaking on behalf of the fascist force which prevailed during the time of the former president. He also noted that the people’s mandate cannot be kicked aside.
